Switzerland Atomic and Nuclear Research | In Retrospect
Nuclear and atomic research in Switzerland has a diverse history and has shaped the development of energy sources, medical applications, and basic science since the 1950s. The Swiss Federal Institute for Reactor Research (EIR) in Würenlingen was the country's first major research institution for the development of nuclear reactors and nuclear safety. In 1988, the EIR merged with the Swiss Institute for Nuclear Research (SIN) to form the globally renowned Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, which plays a leading role in nuclear and particle physics. At ETH Zurich, research focused on neutron radiation and nuclear medicine, while the Department of Physics at the University of Basel operated till 1994 a small research reactor. (luk)
