Since its beginnings, photography has been used to reinterpret facts or erase them. Image manipulations were employed to influence narratives and establish alternative perspectives. This tool of deception is particularly powerful because we trust what we see based on centuries of experience - not least because photography has often been regarded as an expression of objective truth. The examples compiled here from analog photography make the mechanisms of deliberate deception visible and can still help sharpen our critical perspective today. (luk)
