The Hungarian Uprising of 1956, the Opening of the Hungarian border in 1989, and the Hungarian elections April 2026 are three very different historical moments. In 1956, the population rose up against Soviet domination; in 1989, the opening of the border between Hungary and Austria became a symbol of the collapse of the Eastern Bloc; and now, the electorate has brought about a political shift at the ballot box. Nevertheless, these events are linked by similar underlying questions: freedom or concentration of power, alignment with the West or proximity to Russia, self-determination or politically staged sovereignty.
