Switzerland Migros | Duttweiler and the Taxi War (1951)
The so-called "taxi war" of 1951 in Switzerland arose from a conflict between the Landesring der Unabhängigen (LdU) under Gottlieb Duttweiler and the established taxi companies. Duttweiler wanted to break up the monopoly position of the traditional taxi companies and lower prices by introducing cheaper, cooperatively organised taxis. This led to massive resistance from the taxi associations, which took action against the new providers with protests, blockades and legal action. After fierce disputes and political pressure, the project failed, leaving the existing structures in the taxi industry intact. (luk)
