Peter Schellenberg (1940-2021)
The former director of Swiss television, Peter Schellenberg, is dead. The Zurich native died on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at the age of 81. He was in office from 1988 to 2003 - longer than any of his predecessors. In 16 years, he fundamentally rebuilt what was then SF DRS. With a flair for TV trends, the trained freight forwarder gave the public broadcaster a new look and modernized the station with program formats that were still unusual for Switzerland. "Schälli," as he was called by colleagues, focused on infotainment with programs like "10vor10. Complex issues were to be presented to viewers in an attractive and entertaining way. Live broadcasts or self-produced soaps brought the necessary audience proximity in order to survive in the battle against the private stations. Audience ratings became the sword of Damocles over most programs. Among other things, Schellenberg introduced the Infokanal and relied on in-house productions such as "Viktor's Program" and "Lüthi and Blanc. The long-running program "Sternstunde Philosophie" was also launched under his aegis. And the far-reaching structural reform of 1992 brought the necessary entrepreneurial room for maneuver.
