Brian De Palma (*1940)
Brian De Palma, born on 11 September 1940 in Newark, New Jersey, is a US-American film director. His films deal with tension, murder, obsession and mental disorders. Recurring themes and motifs in his films are voyeurism and surveillance, doppelgangers, multiple personalities and violence. De Palma refers to Alfred Hitchcock in very many of his films. De Palma celebrated his first great success in 1976 with the horror thriller Carrie. In the following years he shot a series of other thrillers. He had great success with critics and public especially with the two gangster movies Scarface and The Untouchables in the mid 1980s and in 1996 with Mission: Impossible. (wp)
