Nagra Borehole Detection Drilling Mine Bözberg-1
With the deep borehole Bözberg-1, in Unterbözberg in the Canton of Jura, Switzerland, the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) is supplementing its expertise in the Jura East area. This is necessary for the comparison of the areas in the site selection process for deep geological repositories for radioactive waste. The investigations focus on the properties of the rocks underground - particularly those of the Opalinus Clay in which the repository is to be located. The Bözberg-1 deep borehole is the first deep borehole to be drilled in the Jura East siting area in stage 3 of the ongoing site selection process for a deep geological repository. It is expected to reach a depth of 1020 metres (a maximum depth of 2000 metres has been applied for). A well will take about half a year to three quarters of a year to complete. In the eastern Jura siting area, the geological strata drop off towards the south. The Bözberg-1 well is located at the southern edge of the siting area. This allows all relevant geological strata and the Opalinus Clay at the deepest point in the eastern Jura siting area to be investigated. (nagra/oro)
