Swiss Criminal Cases | Glory and Misery in Ticino's Un-Retirement (1975)
The murder of Hamburg millionaire Egon Zylla on 20 August 1971 in Ticino made headlines far beyond the country's borders. The already badly decomposed body of the strangled retired car dealer was found on 21 September 1971 by tourists packed in a sack on the Locarno-Monte Bre road, not far from Zylla's villa. "Blick" called it "Switzerland's most famous murder case": the two German tax fugitives Willy Geuer and Gisela Kemperdick were sentenced to life and 18 years in prison respectively in 1973 for first ripping off the German millionaire Egon Zylla and then having him killed. Later Federal Councillor Flavio Cotti and the then chief prosecutor Clara Del Ponte were involved in the case on the legal side. (iwi)
