Switzerland Axenstrasse | in Retrospect
The Axenstrasse connects the Swiss villages of Brunnen and Flüelen along the eastern shore of Lake Uri, the southern section of Lake Lucerne. The last section Sisikon-Brunnen was opened in 1865. The Axenstrasse was the last section of road still missing to get from Milan to Zurich. Since then, the road has been repeatedly upgraded as well as relocated into tunnels, as the danger of rockfall from the Axenfels above is great and the road had to be closed regularly due to rock clearance.
