Swiss department stores | Pictures of their history
In 1883, the French writer Emile Zola described his visit to the first glass and steel department stores' in Paris designed by Gustav Eiffel as "a cathedral of commerce for a nation of customers". And indeed, the concept of the department stores' conquered the world from there and since then has also shaped generations here in Switzerland in their consumer behaviour and consumer experience. But since the 1980s, the big sales giants have been ailing and are hardly able to cope with the competition from the emerging online trade. Now, not without melancholy, well-known and symbolic stores are closing. (luk)
