Reformation: The pope bulls against Martin Luther (1521)
On 15 June 1520, Luther was threatened with excommunication if he did not renounce his teachings. But instead of recanting, Luther burned the ecclesiastical decree, the so-called bull, together with other ecclesiastical writings and the church code in the middle of Wittenberg on 20 December 1520. With this, he finally decided against Rome. And the Vatican reacted harshly: on 3 January 1521, the Pope imposed the curse of excommunication on Luther and his writings were burned. (luk)
