Jo Siffert (1936-1971)
Joseph "Jo" Siffert (born 7 July 1936 in Fribourg; died 24 October 1971 in Brands Hatch, Great Britain) was a Swiss racing driver. He first made a name for himself on two wheels, winning the Swiss Motorcycle Championship in 1959 in the up to 350 cc class, before switching to four wheels in a Formula Junior Stanguellini. In 1962, Siffert moved up to Formula 1 as a privateer with a four-cylinder Lotus Climax. He later moved to the Swiss team Scuderia Filipinetti and in 1964 to Rob Walker's private British Rob Walker Racing Team. He won two races in Formula One for the Rob Walker Racing Team and BRM. He died at the Formula One race at Brands Hatch when his car overturned after an accident due to a mechanical failure and he was trapped under the burning car. At his funeral, around 50,000 people lined the streets of Freiburg. This was one of the largest funeral services ever held in Switzerland. (wp)
