Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)
The Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 was triggered by the deployment of Soviet medium-range missiles in Cuba. For 13 days, a nuclear war between the two great powers, the USSR and the USA, seemed closer than ever before. The naval blockade and the mutual mobilisation of soldiers and weapons systems also increased the unpredictability and the possibility of fatal misunderstandings. Finally, the confrontation could be ended through diplomacy. However, the negotiated conditions for the withdrawal of the missiles in Cuba were kept secret from the public. However, people in East and West realised for the first time how quickly and monstrously the danger of a world-wide nuclear war could become real. This is still true today. Those who play geopolitical games with nuclear weapons are playing with the apocalypse. (luk)
