Radiation monitoring. Scientists monitoring samples of air for radiation near the Nevada Test Site, USA, in the late 1950s. Tests of nuclear devices began at the Nevada Test Site (now the Nevada National Security Site) in 1951. Areas that received fallout from the tests saw an increase in cancer in their populations.
