The first three hostages released from the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran, arrive at Rhein-Main U.S. Air Force base in Frankfurt/Main, West Germany, Nov. 20, 1979. From the top of the steps are Marine Sgt. William Quarles, Marine Cpl. Ladell Maples and Kathy Gross. Thirteen of the hostages, the women and African-Americans in the group, were released on November 19 and 20, but the remaining 53 continued to be held.
