TSCHECHOSLOWAKEI JAN PALACH TRAUERFEIER
Czech university student Jan Palach set himself on fire in Wenceslas Square in Prague on January 16,1969, as a political protest against the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. His funeral turned into a major mass protest against the occupation. Another student Jan Zajic burned himself to death in the same place on February 25, 1969, followed by Evzen Plocek in April 1969 in Jihlava. A long line of people winds across the Old Town Square in Prague as citizens wait to pay their last respects to Jan Palach at his coffin in the courtyard of Karolinum, official seat of Charles University, January 22, 1969.
