A MILLION SHILLINGS
MARERO, SOMALIA- NOVEMBER 2007.Armed with Kalashnikovs, boat crew and militia from smuggler Abdullah's gang make preparations for the departure of a doon that will leave that night packed full of human cargo. Sheltered behind rocks above Marero Beach, they stand amid the plastic bottles and debris discarded by the some of the thousands of tahrib that transit through here each year. While the migrants and refugees become anxious to depart as a cold evening wind blows in, the crew must first arrange for their supplies of cigarettes and qat to be brought from town.
