A MILLION SHILLINGS
AL-KHARAZ, YEMEN- APRIL 2008.Heading towards one of Al-Kharaz camp's accommodation blocks at sundown, a woman is helped out by her son and daughter as they carry home pots, pans and plastic sheeting following a distribution of non-food items.Women make up more than half the heads of families in Al-Kharaz. Separated from their husbands through conflict and insecurity, the camp has become a place of exile for thousands of single mothers. Almost all are completely reliant on the rations and aid they receive but it is barely enough to provide for their children. Having escaped from Somalia, their relinquished destinies now lie in this forsaken desert internment. (KEYSTONE/NOOR/Alixandra Fazzina)
