SRI LANKA BAR REEF MARINE SANCTUARY
epa03040314 Dead coral at the Bar Reef marine sanctuary 306.7 square km in extent located 15 km west of Kalpitiya beach 179 km from Colombo, Sri Lanka, 21 December 2011. There are 206 coral species including two endemic species and more than 500 fish species gathering around the island?s marine sanctuary. Major threats to coral reefs around the marine sanctuary are uncontrolled fishing, destructive fishing practices, feeding activities of the Crown of Thorns (Acanthaster planci), a species of Star Fish and the rising temperature of the sea water.
