Fukushima Nuclear Disaster (2011)
The Fukushima nuclear disaster is the name given to a series of catastrophic accidents and severe incidents at the Fukushima Daiichi (Fukushima I) nuclear power plant in Okuma, Japan, and their consequences. The series of accidents began on 11 March 2011 at 14:47 (local time) with the Tohoku earthquake and occurred simultaneously in four of six reactor units. Core meltdowns occurred in units 1 to 3. Large amounts of radioactive material, slightly more than twice that of Chernobyl, were released, contaminating air, soil, water and food in the land and sea environment. (wp)
