Jean-Baptiste Poquelin alias Molière (1622-1673)
Molière, real name Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, born in Paris on 15 January 1622 and died on stage on 17 February 1673, was a French actor, theatre director and playwright. He is regarded by the French as one of their great classics and by many as their greatest author ever. His groundbreaking achievement was to make comedy a genre potentially equal to tragedy and to elevate the theatre, at least for a few years, to a forum for discussion of social problems as well. (wp)
