Nelson Mandela (1918-2013)
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (* 18 July 1918 in Mvezo, Transkei - 5 December 2013 in Johannesburg), in South Africa often referred to by the traditional clan name Madiba, was a leading South African activist and politician in decades of resistance to apartheid and his country's first black president from 1994 to 1999. From 1944 he was involved in the African National Congress (ANC). Because of his activities against apartheid policy in his home country, Mandela had to spend a total of 27 years as a political prisoner in prison between 1963 and 1990. Mandela is regarded as an outstanding representative in the struggle for freedom against oppression and social injustice. Mandela was the most important pioneer of the reconciliatory transition from apartheid to an equality-oriented, democratic state in South Africa. In 1993 he was therefore awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Already during his lifetime he became a political and moral role model for many people worldwide. (wp)
