The local blacksmith trims the hoof of the horse of Mister Vogel, member of the municipal council, in Unterbaech in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, in February 1957. On March 3, 1957, on the orders of the municipal council, the women of Unterbaech were allowed to vote for the first time. However, the municipality's ballot on the question of compulsory civil service for women was revoked by the government of the canton of Valais and the Federation. The majority of cantons implemented female suffrage on the municipal and cantonal level in 1971. Die Abstimmung ueber den obligatorischen Zivilschutz fuer Frauen wurde aber vom Kanton Wallis und vom Bund fuer diese Gemeinde annulliert.
