ABDOMINAL ARTERIES
Abdominal arteries. Historical illustration of the arteries of the abdomen. The arteries are coloured red, showing that they supply oxygenated blood. The major artery, the aorta (centre), divides into the iliac arteries (lower centre) which lead to the legs. Branches are also seen leading to the kidneys (centre right and left). The front part of the muscular abdominal wall has been dissected and folded back at lower left and right. The bladder (round) is seen at lower centre between the iliac arteries. Colour lithograph by Fairland from The Vessels of the Human Body, 1837. Based on drawings by J. Swandale. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/SHEILA TERRY)
