Muscles of the hand, historical artwork. At upper left is the back of a human hand with the skin and fascia (connective tissue) removed to expose the musculature and tendons. At upper right is the first layer of muscles in the palm of the hand. The second layer is at lower left, and the third layer at lower right. The cut ends of tendons can be seen where each successive muscle layer has been removed.
