CERN Large Hadron Collider LHC
On 16 December 1994, CERN gave the go-ahead for the construction of the Large Hadron Collider, the world's most powerful particle accelerator. The LHC will be installed in the existing ring tunnel of the European nuclear research facility CERN, in which the Large Electron-Positron Collider will be installed until its decommissioning in 2000. Unlike its predecessor, the LHC will collide protons that belong to hadrons, i.e. those subatomic particles that are held together by a strong interaction. The Lagre Hadron Collider will go into operation on 10 September 2008. (wp)
