Unspunnenstein | The History
On 3 June 1984, Jura separatists from the Béliers kidnapped the Unspunnen Stone, a symbol of Bernese identity, from the tourist museum near Interlaken. Shortly after the theft, a duplicate was produced. On 12 August 2001, the Unspunnenstein, stolen 17 years earlier, reappeared and was ceremoniously handed over to Shawne Fielding, the wife of Ambassador Thomas Borer. However, the "kidnappers" from the Jura had carved their emblem, twelve European stars and the date of the legendary EEA referendum, 6 December 1992, into the stone. Since then, the stone has been two kilos lighter. The duplicate is therefore still being used for the toast. In 2005, two weeks before the Unspunnen Festival, the original stone was stolen from the Hotel Victoria-Jungfrau for the second time and a cobblestone with the Jura coat of arms was left in its place. Since then, the original has disappeared. (luk)
