- Applying liquid manure to snow-swept field near Rochester, Minnesota USA 1981 - By putting liquid and farmyard manure on their winter fields, many farmers are acting out of sheer necessity - the cesspit in the farmyard is full to the brim. If the snow cover is very thin, the farmer fertilizes the field without ploughing in the manure. If the ground is frozen, the danger is that with an abrupt thaw in spring the nutrients added with the slurry and dung would be washed away and the surface waters become polluted and over-fertilized. The practice is prohibited almost everywhere in Europe and at least frowned upon in Minnesota. The environmental organisations watch it like a hawk.
