- Raised fields in the Mompós Depression, Colombia 1981 - In a wide lowland valley around the small city of Santa Cruz de Mompós, the Magdalena river spreads out into a labyrinthine confusion of shallow lakes, pools and marshes. Whole systems of raised fields, or camellones, dating from pre-Spanish times have been preserved on the western edge of the valley, some of which are still being cultivated to this very day. Several canals between them are also used for aquaculture, if they are not full of seaweed. (Georg Gerster by KEYSTONE) *** Originalbildbeschrieb/Original Caption by Georg Gerster ***
