US sprinter Florence Griffith-Joyner waving with the "Stars and Stripes" after winning the Women's 100 meters sprint final of the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, September 25, 1988. Women's attendance in the Olympics Games only started in 1900 when they were allowed to compete in three sports. It was not until 1948 that a black American woman won a gold medal in the high jump. Griffith-Joyner, who died in 1998 at the age of 39, also won the women's 200m at the Seoul Olympics. (KEYSTONE/EPA PHOTO/DPA/Str)
