Trevor Angus with one of his art works at home in Vancouver..Trevor Angus (42) is originally from Kispiox reserve and belongs to the Gitxan band (tribe). In 1999 he went from Kispiox to Prince George and became addicted to alcohol and drugs. In 2010 he came to Vancouver to chase his dream of becoming an artist. He learned wood carving already at an early age. He has four children of two mothers. The two oldest live with him and his new wife in Vancouver, the other two live with his parents and his ex-wife in Kispiox. Kispiox has about 900 inhabitants, life is difficult specially since the two lumber mills closed. The mills were the main employer of the area. Trevor is quite successful as artist and recently had his first group exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery...In Canada there are currently 630 recognized First Nations governments, the total population is about 700,000 of which half lives in British Colombia and Ontario. life in the reserves is difficult where unemployment is high, specially since the 2008 crisis. Many young First Nations move to Vancouver in the hope for a better life. They try to maintain their culture and identity in the big city and many make a livings as artists.
