People search a noticeboard of items that were exchanged for food in Leningrad, February 1942, during the Nazi siege of 1941- 1944. The siege on Leningrad (or the Blokada), lasted 900 days, in which time food supplies were cut dead, there was no heating, no water supply, almost no electricity and no transport. At least 641,000 people died during this time, many from starvation and cold, but this was preferable to surrendering to the Nazis. In January 1943 the Siege was broken and a year later, on January 27, 1944 it was fully lifted. Leningrad, as it was named after Lenin's death in 1924, as a symbol of socialism, was re-named St Petersburg in 1991. The city was founded by Peter the Great on May 16, 1703.
