Undated Portrait of author William Somerset Maugham. Born at the British Embassy in Paris in 1874, William Somerset Maugham became a writer of great distinction during the early and middle 20th century, undated . Among his celebrated works are 'The Moon and Sixpence' (1919) which is a novel based on the life of Gaugin, and 'Of Human Bondage' (1915) a largely autobiographical novel.
