TRAPPED ON MOUNT SINJAR BY MOISES SAMAN
IRAQ. Sinjar Mountains. August 12, 2014. A frail Yazidi man, separated from his family, calls to them while being carried to an Iraqi airforce rescue helicopter in Mount Sinjar. The man was fleeing religious persecution at the hands of Islamist extremists who had taken over his hometown. In the high grounds of Mount Sinjar, he found safety from ISIS but risked dying of hunger and thirst. He did eventually board the rescue helicopter, but it crashed into the side of the mountain shortly after takeoff. The man was wounded in the crash, and was subsequently rescued by a second helicopter that airlifted him and other survivors to Dohuk, Iraqi Kurdistan.
