ANT COMPOUND EYE, ESEM
Ant compound eye, coloured environmental scanning electron micrograph (ESEM). Compound eyes are made up of hundreds of small facets which offer a fragmented view of the world. A compound eye is not very good at distinguishing detail, but it does enable the detection of tiny movements. Ants are social insects that live in colonies that can contain millions of individuals. They are found worldwide in a diverse range of habitats. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/THIERRY BERROD, MONA LISA PRODUCTION/ SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
