epa07657583 A handout photo made available by the Danish Meteorological Institute (Danmarks Meteorologiske Institut, DMI) on 19 June 2019 shows dogs hauling a sled through meltwater on coastal sea ice during an expedition in northwest Greenland, 13 June 2019. The 'unusual' rapid melting of sea ice occurred last week as temperatures soared above normal levels in Greenland, causing ice sheet surface to experience melting, media reported. The image was taken during a DMI research team expedition to retrieve oceanographic moorings and weather station equipment in North West Greenland. According to a tweet by Steffen M. Olsen from the Centre for Ocean and Ice at DMI, the 'rapid melt and sea ice with low permeability and few cracks leaves the melt water on top.' EPA/STEFFEN M.
