ATLAS MOTH EYE, SEM
Atlas moth eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of compound eye of a atlas moth (Attacus atlas). This is the junction between three lenses, or ommatidia. Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the moth's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x10,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/EYE OF SCIENCE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
