RESERVOIRS IN IRAQ
Reservoirs in Iraq, combined infrared and visible satellite image. The reservoirs (black) seen here, were created by the damming of rivers for hydroelectric power. At upper left is the triangular reservoir formed by the Dukan Dam on the Little Zab River. At lower right is the thin but extensive reservoir formed by the Darbandikhan Dam on the Diyala River. These facilities produce power by allowing water from the reservoir to flow through electricity-generating turbines. They are both located in the As Sulaymaniyah region in northern Iraq. Photographed by the Landsat 1 satellite on 15th October 1972. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/MDA INFORMATION SYSTEMS)
