The CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector at the CMS experimental site in the French commune of Cessy is one of two general-purpose experiments at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider), located around 100 meters underground. The detector is opened up in order to facilitate upgrades and maintenance activities that have been taking place since the beginning of 2013, pictured at CERN near Geneva, Switzerland, on June 11, 2014. At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers from all over the world research the fundamental structure of the universe relying on, amongst other things, the largest particle physics laboratory.
