FRANKREICH METRO PARIS
Undated file photo shows a Paris underground train crossing the Seine near Bir Hakeim on one of the elevated portions of the Metro. Digging for the underground rail transport system was begun in 1898, and Line1 from Porte de Vincennes to Porte Maillot was opened 19 July 1900, in time for the Universal Exposition. At its centenary, the RATP, or Paris transport company, runs two lines of suburban trains, a bus system, two tram lines and the Orlyval airport service, in addition to the underground.
