BRASILIEN RIO DE JANEIRO FAVELA
The picture shows one of the numerous slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 30 October 2006. Once being miserable living quarters of corrugated-iron huts, the slums have developed to city quarters with schools, churches, street lightning and infrastructure. But simultaneously a parallel society controlled by drug dealers emerged. The city and state authorities try to gain back influence in the slums. (KEYSTONE/DPA/C3613 Rika)
