ERSTER WELTKRIEG FRANKREICH SCHLACHT AN DER SOMME 1916
Two British machine-gunners open fire with their Lewis gun on a German stronghold at the start of the Battle of the Somme in July 1916. After a week-long artillery barrage the Allies advanced on the well-defended German positions manned by hundreds of machine gunners. The result was massive slaughter and by the time the campaign drew to a close five months and over a million dead later the Allies had gained just seven miles. (KEYSTONE/CAMERA PRESS/STR) === ; ===
