The control room of the Great St Bernard Tunnel, a road tunnel, pictured on March 19, 1964, during the opening ceremony on the Swiss side. The Great St Bernard Tunnel lies on the north-south axis and connects Martigny in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, with the north-Italian city Aosta set in the eponymous valley. The tunnel is 5,8 kilometers long. Construction work for the first transalpine road tunnel began in 1958 and was concluded in March 1964.
