Humphrey Spender is the world-renown English photographer. A selection of portraits displaying his pioneering photojournalistic style are currently on show at London's National Portrait Gallery. During his most prodigious period, between 1932 and 1942, Spender produced a valuable body of work that significantly contributed to the development of British documentary photography. Working for a new illustrated literary magazine titled Picture Post and for Mass-Observation, a sociological study set up to survey British culture, Spender's humane and detailed windows into British pre-war society were outstanding both for their well-observed insight and subtle resonances, 2003.
