COOK'S SHIP
Making its way to Astoria from Coos Bay, the H.M. Bark Endeavour sails on the Pacific Ocean about 35 miles southwest of the Columbia River Thursday, July 22, 1999. The British-owned tall ship is a replica of explorer Capt. James Cook's 18th century sailing vessel. The floating museum has run afoul of a U.S. law that prohibits ship owners from charging working crew members to sail, according to its captain. The vessel is funded mostly by travelers who pay to work aboard the sailing vessel for a week or longer. (AP Photo/The Daily Astorian, G. Jaros).
