ITALIEN SKULPTUR MICHELANGELO DAVID
Picture taken in autumn 1991 shows Italian Piero Cannata after he smashed with a hammer the left foot of the sculpture "David" by Michelangelo Buonarroti in Florence. On Tuesday 26 January 1999 Cannata, armed with a felt-tip pen, damaged a painting by the American abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollock on display at Rome's Modern Art Museum. The artwork, "Watery Paths" from 1947, was estimated at 475,000 dollars. According to a museum's art historian, the damage does not seem serious. (KEYSTONE/EPA/ANSA/str)
