PLANETARY NEBULA
Planetary nebula IC4406. Optical image of IC4406, a bipolar planetary nebula with an unusual 'rectangular' appearance. The nebula consists of gas thrown off in a cylindrical shell by a central star close to the end of its life, and is about 3500 light years from Earth. This image was made using the 8.2-metre Very Large Telescope 'Antu' at the Cerro Paranal Observatory, Chile. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/EUROPEAN SOUTHERN OBSERVATORY / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY)
