Wilhelm Keitel, the Chief of Staff of the High Command of the Wehrmacht (armed forces), signs the surrender to the Red Army in Berlin-Karlshorst, May 8, 1945. During the Nuremberg Trials he was charged with conspiracy to commit crimes against peace, initiating and waging wars of aggression, war-crimes and crimes against humanity. His defence that he was just following orders was rejected, he was found guilty on all charges and sentenced to death by hanging. He was executed on October 16, 1946. (KEYSTONE/DPA/Str)
