SKIN LESION DIAGNOSIS
Skin lesion diagnosis. Doctor (left) using a SIAscope to help diagnose a lesion on a patient's hand. The SIAscope (spectrophotometric intra- cutaneous analysis scope) uses visible and infrared wavelengths of light to obtain pictures of the skin, which are processed to produce SIAgraphs of the skin components. Various skin disorders, including cancers, psoriasis and photodamage, may be diagnosed. The image on the computer screen is showing the amount of melanin in the dermis of the skin. Red areas indicate high levels of melanin, which can be related to incidence of melanoma skin cancer. The SIAscope is quick, harmless and non-invasive. (KEYSTONE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY/TRACY DOMINEY)
