FALLOUT SHELTER, PENNSYLVANIA, USA, 1979
Fallout shelter sign (on wall) and access hatch, in Goldsboro, Pennsylvania, USA. Fallout shelters are designed to be used to shelter from the effects of radioactive fallout from a nuclear strike or nuclear accident. The shelter is shielded against radiation, and contains supplies of food and drink to support people for several weeks until the radioactivity levels have fallen to safe levels. This fallout shelter was photographed in April 1979, following the nearby Three Mile Island nuclear accident in March of that year.
